One of the favorite holidays of the Russians is the city day. This holiday is celebrated normally during the period from April to October when most of the events can be held outdoors. City day is usually held on weekends and many people can participate in the celebration.
First this celebration was held on September 20, 1987, on the 400th anniversary of the city founding. That year it was decided to hold annually such great celebration. The celebration starts early in the morning with food fairs where you can buy fresh white honey, mustard oil, milk and meat, various vegetables and fruits for the holiday table. At 11 a.m. people come to the city centre to take part in numerous celebrations.
Everyone can find something new. The programme usually includes a variety of festivals and competitions for children of different ages. You can visit Festival of Volgograd ice cream, children's art competition and the concert of pupils of musical and choreographic schools. Volgograd is famous for its sporting traditions. Every year thousands of people participate in track and field race Volgogradskaya milya ("Volgograd mile"), and the brave ones can take part at the championship called Stalingradskaya bitva ("The battle of Stalingrad") of the cup of the Governor of the Volgograd region.
Many people live in peace and harmony on the territory of the Volgograd region. During the city day the parade of national cultures, the competition of Cossack songs and even the exhibition of national dishes are held. Don’t miss the tour- musical route "Blue trolleybus". A solemn salute on the main square of the city is a wonderful completion of the holiday.
