The Museum of Local History

The Museum of Local History (Oblastnoy krayevedcheskiy muzey) is a wonderful sightseeing of Volgograd located in the building constructed in the eclectic style with elements of art Nouveau. The museum is the monument of history and architecture of the late 19th – early 20th century. The exposition of the museum is located on several floors, it tells its visitors about the history, culture and wildlife of the region. On the ground floor you can see the species of flora and fauna. The second floor is devoted to the history of ancient people who lived hundreds of thousands of years ago – here you can find household items and treasures of the Golden Horde. The Volgograd Regional Museum has 143 000 items in its collections, 111 500 of them belong to the main fund. Among the most interesting museum exhibits is the silver bowl with handle in the form of a winged griffin dated to the 1st century BC; the cap and the cane of Emperor Peter the Great given by the king to the citizens during his stay in Tsaritsyn in 1722.
